HISTORY

Back
This photo from 1865 looks south across the new inner harbour to the South Pier in the distance. The vestige of South Pier that still remains today is only about one third of the original length. The lighthouse at the seaward end was removed to Colombo, Sri Lanka. The pier was first breached by the great storm of 1895 and successive winter gales over more than a century have left today's picturesque ruin.
